This is one of the oddest cinema gunfights; it seems almost to be making an aesthetic argument against Woo, Hark, et al.: sedate control over frothy freneticism. Arguments of film style don’t have to be boring though as demonstrated by this scene, which maintains its uniquely rigorous cool via the actors’ bored stoicism, the underground-pool blues, and a steadily metered and plumb-lined value in all aspects of the montage.* It’s almost relaxing. The music certainly helps too.
* “Montage” in the Bazinian sense. Yes, I am an asshole.
